Abigail Waddell
Demonstration - "Oil Painting - Big Skies"
Tuesday 11th June 2024, 2.00 - 4.00pm in the Pavilion
Abigail is a successful landscape painter specializing in big skies. She works part-time for the NHS as a consultant and spends the remainder of her time painting views that are important to her and for exhibitions and commissions.
Abigail writes about herself [extracted from "About me" on her website]:
I paint because I love it, and I love that I get to be out and about taking in amazing views and translating them into something I enjoy painting and others enjoy looking at!
I live in the Cotswolds and paint mainly local landscapes inspired by being out and about walking in fields, villages and towns. I also paint scenes related to my favourite places in the UK, mainly North West Scotland where I have spent every summer for the past 25 years. Also Wales, Devon and Cornwall.
I like to sketch and paint plein-air often finishing works, or creating larger works, based on my sketches when back in the Studio. I favour oils for landscapes of land or sea in which the light, and in particular the clouds, demand an impressionistic approach. This allows the work to reflect more than simply a snapshot of what is in front of me and gives the viewer a role in its interpretation.
My work is available online with British Contemporary Art and at the Affordable Art Gallery, Burford Garden Company and the Spencer House Gallery, Tetbury. I also exhibit in local Galleries and sell work on my Facebook and Instagram.
Abigail had a very busy day before she arrived at the Pavilion having unexpectedly been called out to run a clinic at GWH even though this was not planned or scheduled. Much credit goes to her for coming straight from this stressful work to demonstrate to us!
An audience of over thirty members and guests enjoyed a polished, professional and very amusing demonstration. Abigail talked throughout explaining what she was doing and why it was being done at this stage. She explained the materials that she used (brushes, paints, thinner, cleaners etc) in great detail and answered all of our questions.
