DRAWING (on the right side of the brain)

Back to Learning

Betty Edwards, author of the well-known book of the same name, produced seven rather long videos demonstrating her approach to drawing using real life students. The original videos selected from YouTube by Vedanti RamIall-Moodley, one of our members, are now only available to purchase on a US (Region1) DVD (available on Amazon). They are no longer on YouTube.

Instead I have selected some other short videos from YouTube which use Betty's techniques. Enjoy!

Just click the right-facing arrow to view the video. You can pause, stop, fast forward or view the video full screen by using the control panel at the bottom of the video window. If the control panel is not visible, left click or tap once in the video window to display it. It will disappear automatically after a few seconds. For those not familiar with YouTube, many of the videos will begin with a short advert which can sometimes be skipped after a few seconds. Look for the countdown icon (in seconds) at the right hand side of the video window and click on it as soon as you see "Skip Ad".

Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain: Chapters 1 & 2 - First Steps in Drawing by Levi Sorta. Published on 20 Oct 2018. Length 18 minutes. 'This video is not a lesson, and I'm not a teacher. I'm a student trying to teach myself using the book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. The first step, according to the book, is making three drawings, a portrait from memory, a self portrait using a mirror, and a drawing of your hand. You're supposed to do this before you get any further instruction so that you can have a baseline to compare to after you've made some improvement. At the end, I also do a prescribed exercise involving different types of lines.'

Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain: Chapters 3 & 4 - Getting Into Right-Side Mode by Levi Sorta. Published on 3 Mar 2019. Length 16 minutes. 'In these chapters, Betty Edwards talks about the differences between different "modes" our brain operates in. In right-side mode (or "R" mode), we are in a better position to simply draw what we see, rather than filtering our drawing through our language faculties and basically overthinking things. Her book guides the reader through some exercises that help us cut out the left side of the brain, and get into a more creative mode. Along the way, I experienced a nice sense of "flow" that made the time spent drawing fly by!'

Betty Edwards Drawing Exercises by Christian Peterson. Published on 8 Sep 2014. Length 4 minutes. 'This video demonstrates three drawing exercises from Betty Edwards book, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain.'
