Jean Perrett

Demonstration - "Impressionist Landscape and Water in Oil"
Tuesday 14th July 2026, 2.00 - 4.00pm in the Pavilion

Short Report

Once again, Lechlade Art Society members were fortunate to see another talented artist, Jean Perrett, at work, this time in oils.

Jean explained that tone, along with colour, were her principal considerations whilst loosely sketching out two quick thumbnail approaches for her intended landscape picture. Dark tones are to be painted first, which will produce heavily contrasting marks when mid and light colours are applied afterwards. Brushes are not totally cleaned during the painting process because slightly dirty colours create balance and harmony.

As Jean worked around her canvas, she was keen to emphasise that you can have too much of a good thing.  It is important to hold yourself back from making many repetitious likeable marks which will destroy your picture through their overuse. Taking into account all of her guidance, Jean’s final flourish at the end of the demonstration were the lightest flowers in the foreground, applied minimally with a dirty white (as she called it).  This completed the painting in a successful manner.

Jean will be leading a workshop during the month of October 2026, date to be confirmed.

About Jean (from her website):

I am a happily married mother of four grown up sons and had a nursing career for 40 years.

I have always enjoyed painting and gardening. In 2012 I was inspired, at a workshop by Peter Dolbear, to paint loose and colourful watercolours. Since then I have been experimenting with all media and thoroughly enjoying myself!

My style is impressionist - loose, lively and colourful. I want to see the medium. I love watermarks, knife marks, brush marks, scrapes and scratches. My subject can be anything.

I have been fortunate to exhibit at The Royal United Hospital in Bath and The Oriel Gallery in The National Botanical Gardens of Wales. I currently exhibit at Handle House Gallery, Devizes. My work has been selected for The Pound open, Trowbridge Town Arts, Salisbury Open Exhibition and Swindon Museum and Art Gallery exhibitions.

The National Trust magazine have published my work on two occasions.
