Laurie Plant

A Show of Work and Talk followed by a Demonstration - "Drawing a Hand"
Tuesday 10th March 2026, 2.00 - 4.00pm in the Pavilion

Short Reports

"A well received session. Laurie brought along a huge selection of artwork and spoke about some at length explaining how he likes to be outside and work on a large scale. He uses a variety of media mainly pencil, charcoal, pastel and watercolour wash.

Laurie then made a study of his hand holding a shell using charcoal and white pastel. He sat on the floor so that everyone could see - a first for the Society!"

Zoe Hing

"This month we were treated to a very interesting and enjoyable, although very different, demonstration. Laurie is an artist from Cirencester with the firm conviction that there should be no rules in art. He tends to work on a larger scale than most, in some cases on murals and similar projects. Laurie started the session by talking about his work and invited members of the audience to choose a piece which he then talked about in more detail and invited questions.

After the break for refreshments, Laurie started his drawing demonstration. I don't remember any artist sitting down on the floor to work!  Using a large piece of tinted paper and charcoal, Laurie drew an image of his left hand holding a seashell. He started off very loosely to establish the position on the paper but soon had a powerful outline sketch. It was not very obvious what he was holding at that point. Next came some shading (for the shadows) and suddenly the seashell was there. Laurie then used a white pastel to add highlights and the picture was complete, done in little more than half an hour."

Thanks to Zoe and Bob for the short reports and for taking the following photographs

Note: The picture of Venice (second image in the second gallery) can be viewed in any orientation. There is a hole bored in the stretcher at its centre so that the canvas can be hung on a nail and rotated.
