Paul Deacon - "Portraits in Charcoal Demonstration"
Tuesday 10 March 2020, 2.00pm to 4.00pm

Martyn Worman wrote about this demonstration on 13th Mar 2020:
Paul started by describing that his self-portrait would "appear out of the paper" - and indeed it did!

Paul used a mirror positioned so that only eye, rather than head and neck, movement was required to create his self-image on the paper. He used slightly shiny plain white cartridge or photocopy paper, so that the charcoal did not sink in, and started by giving the paper a uniform coating with the side of his black charcoal stick. He then lifted out the brighter highlights with a combination of clean fingers, tissue and, where the coating was more stubborn, a normal eraser. The image thus started to appear out of the paper without any drawing being done.

Paul then added the harder edges and shaping, where greater contrast was required, by drawing with the edge of his charcoal. The image thus became much more punchy. Altogether a very interesting demonstration!
