DR ROGER JONES - WORKSHOP - OILS:
'COASTAL LANDSCAPES'
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 4TH 2018, 10 AM – 4PM
One expression of a ‘coastal landscape’ are the kinds of harbours, inlets and estuaries confined by land in Devon and Cornwall. Newton Ferrers is such a place.
Inlets like this are particularly interesting at low tide, when rivers and exposed mudflats glisten with reflected sunlight, and boats heel over at appealing angles.
Combine these atmospheric qualities with a beguiling, even novel viewpoint, and you have ticked off the first two my seven priorities in a successful approach to a subject.
Next comes close consideration of composition, allied with an appreciation of interlocking tonal structure. Number five is your chosen palette of colours-always a personal choice.
To enable this I chose a monochromatic reference photo to allow an individual interpretation of colours, and a small 12 x 8 inches board to allow completion within the time we had. And didn’t we do well !
To round off the day everyone had produced a very appealing range of interpretation, all different, colourful and accomplished.
But what are my last two priorities, six and seven?
Well, be content with making single brush strokes, moving on, sometimes swiftly to the next; ‘one stroke and move on’ the mantra here. Who was it who said ‘love every brush stroke’? And lastly, in at seven: partially combine your colours, don’t overmix them. The result? Colourful, variegated, even captivating ‘prismatic’ effects are inescapable.
