Rosemary Bray
I am a self-taught artist and these days I work mainly in oils. Although I enjoy diversifying on occasion, I paint primarily landscapes in traditional style. Other than art being my favourite subject at school, almost all of my painting, until retiring nine years ago, consisted of wonderfully messy and creative play with my children and grandchildren. Presented with the opportunities of retirement, I signed up to a local adult education course run by a lovely artist who introduced us to many mediums, artists and styles - and who had positive words for us all. This was my first ‘hook’ into the passion of painting but, only a few months later, I was diagnosed with cancer. Both my paints and enthusiasm went into hibernation. |
Then, six years ago having very recently moved to the area, we saw a poster advertising the Lechlade Art Society Annual Exhibition and went to look. That was a pivotal moment for me - I was hooked! The standard and variety of the exhibits was amazing but the work of one artist inspired me so much that I joined the Society the same day. Initially I was concerned that there was no ‘teacher’ but the encouragement and expertise so generously shared by others means that learning and growth are inevitable.
Life gets in the way sometimes but I love the Thursday morning painting sessions, the monthly demonstrations and the workshops. I feel I owe a great deal to Lechlade Art Society so when, recently, I was approached to join the Committee there was really only one decent answer!
