LECHLADE ART SOCIETY NEWS
Monthly Meeting Tuesday 9th July - A Brush with Africa
Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 9th July, 2.00 - 4.00pm in the Pavilion. Simon Stevenson, a wildlife artist, will give a talk entitled "African Wildlife”. Please be seated by 1.55pm. From Simon's website:
Simon was educated in Tanzania, then Kenya and finally in England where he was to eventually settle in 1979, and where he now lives in the county of Shropshire with his wife Kate. It was here that he began to rekindle his deep rooted memories and love of Africa by painting and sketching these beautiful wildlife images. Being wholly self taught, he originally used the unusual medium of Tea and dry Ochre pigment. By using this medium, Simon managed to capture the colour, mood and shimmering beauty associated with this ancient but delicate land. It would appear that his beloved Africa has firmly etched itself into his soul.
2012 saw a new development in Simon’s artistic style with the introduction of the medium of Chalk and Charcoal on black pastel paper in the form of animal specimen sketches. However, in 2018 he further developed his style, despite being colour blind (Deuteranopia), and began to sketch images using the medium of Pastels. Many of these sketches are currently displayed as reproduction canvas images in a number of wildlife lodges throughout Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Uganda and South Africa.
Originals in all three of his styles have become much sought after and now adorn the walls of many private collectors worldwide. Both originals and limited edition prints are available for purchase through his extensive website. He has completed many private commissions for existing and new clients and continues to do so.

Michelle Ouzman
It is with regret that I write to tell you that sadly a member of LAS, Michelle Ouzman, died recently. Michelle had not attended LAS activities this year due to ill health. Michelle had a career in the RAF and since retirement was active as a Gloucestershire representative for the war graves commission and a counsellor for RAF personnel. I will send a card of condolences to her daughter Lauren and other members of the family.

Fairford Art Society Rupert Aker Workshop - Sunday 14th July
Members will recall Rupert's excellent demonstration to the Society in June 2022 and may well have attended one of his follow-up workshops (August and October 2022). If you missed them, or would like more, Fairford Art Society is having a Rupert Aker workshop on Sunday 14th July from 10am to 4pm at the Fairford Community Centre, cost £40. They have a couple of places open (as at 30th May) for this workshop. Rupert paints in oils but is happy to have acrylic artists attending his workshop.
See their website for details.
Lechlade Art Society at Oxfordshire Artweeks 2024
Lord Faringdon, our Patron, kindly allowed the Society to have a week-long Open Studios event at Buscot Park. Buscot Park is in Oxfordshire so this enabled the Society to participate in Oxfordshire Artweeks which is a county-wide event throughout May. Ten of our members showed work and demonstrated their skills from Saturday 4th to Sunday 12th May inclusive, 2pm to 6pm every day. If you missed it there are photographs here:

Sad News, Email to Members sent 17 March
It is with profound regret that I write to you today to say that two members of LAS have recently passed away.
Yvonne Ayoub, although not a member for so very long, was beginning to get involved with the Society. She will be missed, especially by those members who knew her well.
Joan Tyrell was an active member of the Society, adding to her long list of other hobbies and interests. She regularly attended the Thursday Group meetings, workshops and even attended the February demonstration with her daughter and grandson. As her death was sudden, we do not have any further details.
We shall be sending a card of condolence to both families on behalf of us all at the Lechlade Art Society.
