Following a recent demonstration by Rod Craig (see Rod Craig March 2023), several members asked for a workshop featuring Rod's vibrant watercolour painting technique.
Rod is an artist working in both Bath and Woodstock. After a long career in design, he became a full time artist in 2010 and his work is in collections in the UK, Germany and New York. In his own words:
Watercolour painting is a perfect medium for capturing the energy and the drama of the landscape. I love its vibrancy and fluidity. Whilst it is extremely challenging, it is completely addictive as no other medium offers the same degree of spontaneity.
Participants were provided with one beautiful A3 Khadi sheet for their work and cut pieces of Fabriano cartridge paper for practice and mark making.

Workshop Report - "Tricks of the Trade"
Twelve members attended Rod Craig's workshop at the Pavilion on Friday 29 September and were rewarded with access to the watercolour skills that set Rod Craig apart from the crowd. He is a strong, intuitive watercolour painter and educator.
On arrival, each student was given a table to themselves, so they could spread out and move freely about their work. After the settling in phase, Rod gave an expert and lengthy demonstration that made his craft look perfectly achievable. With plenty of test paper sheets, water, paint and tools, coupled with effortless guidance, the first half of the day was employed in loose mark making on tester pieces out of our comfort zone. A relaxed, chatty lunch was had, and the second half of the day was dedicated to one consolidated artwork. Rod kindly gave us noticeably superior quality handmade white Khadi paper for the task. Two hours of intense production later, every student achieved a dynamic fluid painting of their chosen subject.
